Songs of Travel

  • Hietsun Paviljonki Hiekkarannantie Helsinki, 00100 Finland (map)

Tales of travel and journeys - physical, metaphysical, psychological and emotional - are interwoven to explore some of the most profound aspects of human nature. The program features the Finnish premiere of Australian composer Andrew Ford's 'In Transit' for piano and speaker. The work is a collection of short movements that combine the composer’s observations, thoughts and fragments of overheard conversations that have occurred during his travels in Australia, Finland the UK and the USA. Originally composed for pianist and narrator, this often humorous and poignant work is performed here in a version for speaking pianist. Having become increasingly interested in the ways in which the spoken word can enrich music and vice versa, Aura Go has compiled her own arrangement of selections from Oscar Wilde’s powerful and harrowing letter De Profundis and music of Sibelius, Sitsky, Crumb and Rzewski. She is then joined by mezzo-soprano Erica Back for Vaughan Williams’ timeless cycle, 'Songs of Travel', to texts by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Music by Ford, Sitsky, Crumb, Rzewski, Sibelius and Vaughan Williams. Words by Ford, Wilde and Stevenson. Aura Go, speaking pianist. Erica Back, mezzo-soprano.
